Bathroom Mirror Lights

There is nothing that makes a bathroom really beautiful than the bathroom mirror lights. They set the decorative tone of this heavily used space, and has some real rules about fixture placement and installation. for the most part, bathroom mirror lights lend a great atmosphere to the room, and is a practical measure as well. Proper lighting in the bathroom is an essential part of safety in this room. having had a few experiences with slip and falls as well as poor lighting certainly caused me to do some research and come up with some practical advice.

Essentially there are two considerations for bathroom mirror lights. One is task lighting, lighting is necessary to see what you are doing while in the bathroom. Here the choices can range from sconce lighting on the sides of the mirror and/or cabinetry that provides adequate lighting as well as aesthetics. the choices can be two, three or four bulb lighting. the other is atmosphere lighting, the kind that makes the bathroom look according to plan with furnishings, and tiling preferences. Sometimes here creativity can be the key; ceiling fans with lighting at the base can serve double duty with beauty and function in mind. Here, ceiling mounted, close to ceiling mounted and even chandelier choices can be made. in any case, they should match with the design of the mirrored lighting. It is the lighting around the sink that is used for personal grooming that is the focal point of design.

Finally, one good makeup tip: Lighting fixtures should be placed about 35-40 on either side of the vanity mirror to avoid casting shadows on the face while putting on makeup or shaving. and if in doubt, fixtures can be placed directly on mirrored surfaces to again avoid casting shadows. To do this, just make sure that the lighting is placed directly at head level.

Time to raise anchor – The Standard

Time to raise anchor John-John Williams IV Thursday, May 24, 2012 The rustic, woodsy themes of autumn and winter have given way to crisp, blue nautical themes that are expected to dominate home decor for the next few months at retail outlets as well as small chains and locally owned shops.

“Nautical is super trendy right now,” said Gary Godby, a manager at home store Trohv. “It’s gotten super popular. It’s cute. It makes people anticipate the warm weather a little more.”

At a recent home furnishings trade show in Atlanta, he was struck by all of the water-inspired decor items. Exhibitors were displaying throw pillows adorned by underwater creatures and accent pieces decorated with shells, rope and other objects associated with the sea.

Godby said he knew he could have fun with the latest trend, starting with something as simple as a fresh coat of paint.

Colors such as light blue, gray and other “beachier colors” are the way to go. “It’s the easiest way to change a room,” he said.

You can commit all the way and transform your room into a sea-inspired getaway.

Or you can take a more conservative approach and scatter a few nautical items about.

Retail store Stebbins Anderson has gone hook, line and sinker for the trend.

The showroom is filled with nautical finds, including seashell lamps and elaborate living room setups that look right out of an issue of Coastal Living.

“We’re really doing well with it,” said Liz Roberts, buyer for Stebbins Anderson, adding that the nautical trend has been a few years in the making for the home-furnishings and hardware store.

“It’s kind of an evolving category for us,” she said. “This year, we saw it more than normal.”

Roberts recommends that customers take one room and transform it using the nautical theme.

In her home, she decorated her bathroom in a beach motif. “Have fun with it,” she said. “Treat it like you are on vacation.”

If you can’t commit fully, Roberts suggested, incorporate accent pieces such as pillows, throws or picture frames. “Complement the furniture and don’t overtake it,” she said.

Godby suggests using painted furniture to achieve a seaside feel.

“Painted furniture in distressed colors such as white, light blue and yellow give you that beach house look,” he said. “In fact, I’ve had several people use those items – furniture in distressed colors – for their beach house.”

Dee Cunningham, owner of Delight Designs, opts for an artistic approach with paint.

The decorative artist incorporated a custom art piece that included a stylized whale and toy chest for a project she completed recently.

Cunningham also recommends focusing on accessories.

Add pops of fun and color with whimsical items, keeping the room’s larger basic pieces in neutral hues.

“Themed rooms get really old, really quick,” she warned.

“You don’t want to be stuck with something.”

Edwardian charm with a hi-tech twist

The Edwardians who first lived here would surely stand agog at the luxury, comfort and technology installed in their home. Indeed, anyone from the 21st century couldn’t fail to be impressed, such is the quality of renovation.

Built in 1903, The Glen has been wired with a Bose sound system, has solid oak flooring almost everywhere, banks of fitted wardrobes with remote control lighting, and a similar lighting system in the reception rooms.

Granite surfaces in the kitchen and utility room and swanky modern bath/shower rooms keep up the feeling of modernity, while if extra space were required, a loft on would serve a variety of roles.

Meanwhile, the plot covers an acre, with fabulous far-reaching views, a useful outbuilding with a WC, and driveway with parking space for many vehicles.

The reception hall doubles as a dining room and the ceiling rose and cornice in here has counterparts in both reception rooms. A chimney breast in the living room has a recess, while the sitting room has marble fireplace with granite hearth and gas fire. There’s also a bay window at the front and a door to the rear terrace.

White Shaker-style kitchen units (also in the utility room) contrast with black surfaces and under a window seat is storage space.

This space, like much of the house, is painted white.

An en suite with the master bedroom includes a Whirlpool bath and separate shower with body jets, while the main bathroom, also fully tiled, has a free-standing bath, his and hers wash basins, a walk in shower with lighting, under-floor heating and heated mirrors.

From the second bedroom, French doors open on to a balcony – a good place from which to enjoy the view.

The fifth bedroom and loft room occupy the top floor. The front garden is south-east facing, with a lawn and a selection of shrubs and trees, including a magnolia.

At the rear is a slate terrace, then steps up to lawn.

How Much Thought Have You Put Into Your House Lighting?

Natural light can satisfy the functional and aesthetic needs of a home during the day. that is why natural lighting is completed by artificial light, which not only defines the space, but actually emphasises or hides volume and produces expected effects if used properly.

Every room has a specific function and requires a particular lighting system. in every situation artificial lighting has a purpose whether that be to highlight the furniture, making a certain interior design object the focus of a room, or just has a practical role; helping at reading and cooking.

The living room represents the business card of any family. the lighting here is a very important aspect, helping in many activities, but also giving the room a relaxing and welcoming feel. one can use recessed lighting or chandeliers to highlight certain areas. For general lighting a flush mount light is the most adequate – avoid big pendants in flats

As a general rule, in the bedroom strong light doesn’t fit. here the atmosphere must be smooth and intimate, although for the ladies’ makeup table well lit mirror is a must. For those night readers a lamp on the bedroom nightstand can come in handy. For the general room lighting one can use wall lights in dark corners of the room.

The kitchen is a light-loving space, where light is need it in every corner, although some need it more then others, like the kitchen counter or the interior of the wall cabinets. to achieve this effect you can place spot lights over the cabinet doors or some neon tubes over the working space. You can use spotlight fittings to illuminate the entire room.

I haven’t forgotten about the bathroom, for some, the most important room in the house. it has some areas where directional lighting has to be used, like the mirror area (spot lights or flush fittings), but also some zones where uniform lighting distribution, of sufficient intensity, is needed.

The access hallway is probably the most used area of the home and requires a bright light, that you can get using flush lighting with one or more light bulbs.

To create a special vibe in the entire house or some specific areas you can use decorative lighting sources – lighting globes with pieces of glass, lava lamps, floor lamps, fireplaces, etc. nevertheless candles give a special touch to a room. Their importance shouldn’t be overlooked when trying to obtain a romantic and attractive setting.

What has to be remembered is that artificial lighting has to chosen depending on the destination of the room, the activities that are going to be done there and the number of people accessing it. A correct choice contributes to obtaining the atmosphere and comfort desired.

The variety of lighting fittings makes it sometimes hard to appreciate what works best in certain space. For every room in your house are a series of recommendations to help you make the right decision.
