Some Tips: Design Modern Bathroom

Bathrooms are not only bathrooms anymore and some principles of contemporary bathroom need to be incorporated in designing a bathroom space using modern design. Modern bathroom design has lines that are bold and clean, décor low and the use of white color abundantly. the bathroom in today’s world isn’t just a location to do what is typically done in a bathroom but also a room that is elegant as well. In designing a modern bathroom, the following would be the tips which may be followed.

Tips and Tricks for a modern bathroom design

Lines that are clean may play a role that is significant within the décor of the bathroom and it is important to think about the outer shape of the windows, mirror, counter top etc and ensure that they match with each other. Typically, outer lines that are wavy might be ruled out since they are not common within the style of modern bathrooms.

You should emphasize or pick ovals or horizontal straight lines and use them for any neat and bold look. a far more subtle and harmonious and subtle look is provided by using ovals. To match the lines, one can make use of a countertop that’s rectangular, a sink that is rectangular or square, a horizontal mirror that’s large etc and add lines to the bathroom that are horizontal. when going the oval route, a window ledge that is oval in shape could be aligned with the bathtub, curved countertop, mirror etc to choose the scheme.

ColorsWith color, as being a minimalist or going for a look that is minimal is key so when selecting a scheme with two colors, for spaces that smaller it is recommended to choose white along with a color such as bamboo green, light aqua, soft green, wooden etc to go with the white. For a bathroom that is around the larger scale, shades that are darker as in blacks, purples, reds, grays etc could be selected.

The bathroom may feel closed in when utilizing patterns. However, for a bathroom that is medium or large in size, the ceiling may be painted or one wall may be painted with designs in interior paint or tiles with designs on them may be used. Addition of more patterns can result in a design that’s reflective of mid century modern style.

LightingA very important role in the style of small bathrooms in a modern strategy is lighting because it may be used to create a place that is lit well. the very best choices for lighting in bathrooms are lights that are white or off-white colored. For any space that’s small, it is suggested to help keep the countertop clear of light fixtures and have just a small lamp. If the bathroom is big, ceiling lights which are small and in almost any color may be added to the ceiling along with light fixtures that are colored to bring ambience to the bathroom. For natural light, a skylight may be used.

Less is MoreThe key of contemporary bathroom design is that less is more also it means that lesser amounts of items are for use within the decoration of the space. For bathrooms that are smaller in size, it’s good to keep the countertop free from items and if not, possess the least number of items on it. using a bathroom light that is white colored, bamboo plants that are considered lucky and some wooden mats are great. using hanging sinks in the bathroom instead of pedestal sinks is definitely an alternative that works well in creating more room. Compactness, similarly, in the design elements which are used is important.

Space that is unclutteredClutter results in a sense of chaos and it is advised to possess a bathroom that is free from clutter and has shelves under the counter for storage. it is possible to have mirrors on the cabinets in bathrooms as well as in front of the sink for the sake of keeping brushes, mouthwash and other types of accessories. using a wooden shelf that is very small just outside a bathroom that is very small works really well and whatever is required could be acquired while using the bathroom.

The above mentioned was a discussion about the style of modern bathrooms and it is easy to have a beautifully-designed and decorated bathroom by making use of these tricks and tips.

Some Tips: Design Modern Bathroom

Create a Timeless, Traditional Bathroom

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

A traditional bathroom is a great long-term investment. It will never go out of fashion, so you won’t have to update or modernise, and if you ever decide to sell your house in the future, the bathroom will be one less room to worry about because a traditional style suits almost everyone.

Design

Mixing ceramic, wood, glass and mosaic is a sure-fire way to realise your dream traditional bathroom design. However, Sean Cochrane, creative director and founder of Cochrane Design, affirms that the next big thing in bathrooms is stone. “Natural stone offers a timeless quality, with Cararra and the cleaner Limestones being favourites this season,” he says.

Once you’ve decided on materials, you’ll be thinking about fixtures: baths, toilets, sinks. The roll top bath has been popular since the 18th Century. as well as this, it is both comfortable and luxurious, making it the perfect traditional piece. To ensure your sink reflects the classic look, choose a ceramic sink which sits on its own pedestal and has taps with a cross head handle that you rotate to get the water flowing.

Add a traditional twist to your toilet by having a high-mounted flush and chain on a high level cistern. However, if this is not practical, be sure to choose a lever handle rather than a modern button flush at the top of the cistern to keep it classic. as well as finding the right materials and fixtures to create your classic traditional bathroom, it is important to choose a good colour. White is classic, doesn’t date and makes a bathroom look sparkling clean. if white is a bit too plain for your tastes, why not go for ivory or off-white?

Accessories

Alternatively, you can add a splash of colour with some choice bathroom accessories. if you are worried about the mounting expense, there is no need. “With clever use of design and a few choice pieces, equally impressive bathrooms can be achieved on a lower budget with the vast selection available currently,” Cochrane says.

When it comes to toilet rolls holders and towel rails, stick to stainless steel; otherwise invest in brightly coloured accessories. Pebble Grey stock colourful and stylish accessory sets, including a toothbrush holder, a soap dish and lotion dispenser. Alternatively, add a splash of colour with a patterned shower curtain, coloured shower mats or a green pot plant.

Lights

If you want to be able to show off your brand new bathroom in style, you’ll need to invest some time into selecting the best bathroom lights to do this. Stainless steel bathing lighting would best match the toilet roll holder and towel rail from earlier, helping to pull the look together – and it suits most tastes. Installing silver wall lighting near the mirror is practical and brightens up any dark spaces, drawing attention to your new fixtures and accessories. another way to provide an attractive ambient light is to install LED lights that recess into shower trays, tiles or the floor.

KBDi executive director Alex Milne with Certified Designer of the Year Patricia La Torre (OUTSIDEINSIDE Building Elements).

Patricia’s winning entry had the hallmarks of design excellence. Her clients, owners of a beautiful Victorian period home, sought an open design for their kitchen that acknowledged the needs of a young family and a lifestyle of constant entertaining. They wanted their kitchen to be complementary to a new and modern building addition and to be the hub of social activity, while not compromising on function. Heaps of bench space, easily accessible storage, privacy to the sink, appliances that could be quickly concealed, a pantry, storage for oils and spices in the cooking location and a bar refrigerator were all requested in the brief.

Eileen Middleton (Eileen Middleton Interiors) accepting the award for Australian Kitchen Designer of the Year from Smeg Australia's Tamara Buchanan.

Middleton successfully created a space that is sleek but casual: a real home with a real kitchen. Interesting and practical, all principles of kitchen design were incorporated: timber detailing adds texture and interest; clever use of lattice screens creates privacy and adds a graphic element; the splashback shows a different interpretation; and use of line in the island complements the floor. this kitchen has elements that draw you all around the room, material detailing is superb and the subtle use of lighting blends seamlessly with adjoining spaces.

Designer Training executive office Julie Shaw presenting Sam Robinson (Royston Wilson Design) with the Bathroom Designer of the Year Award.

Sam Robinson’s clients especially wanted more light and a modern space, because the existing bathroom was cramped and dreary. A large window was added for natural light, and extensive use of strategically placed mirrors and a mirror ball over the bath provides more light and reflection. the vanity unit appears to float and the bench top protrudes through the shower screen to become a shower shelf. the drop-in bath has strong simple lines and all surfaces are seam free. A simple angled blade of glass delineates the shower area, with the shower head mounted flush to the ceiling.

Bathroom Lighting and Ventilation Basics

Whether you’re doing a bathroom renovation, restoration or addition, lighting and ventilation play one of the most important roles in bathroom design. But bathroom lighting and ventilation is more than just a simple switch and fan. It’s about getting the proper airflow to prevent mildew and mold growth, getting the best task and ambient lighting and getting the best system for the best price. Use this guide to bathroom ventilation and lighting to get the ultimate in light fixtures and bathroom ventilation for your bathroom makeover project.

Ventilation

The ventilation system of a bathroom typically consists of a fan mounted into the ceiling. This pulls humid and hot air out through a duct that leads either into the soffit or directly into a roof vent. a ventilation fans ability to move air is measured by a cubic feet per minute scale of CFM. the higher the CFM rating, the faster the fan will pull air out of the bathroom. many ventilation kits also involve a light fixture that allows you to get both a functional ventilation system and a fashionable light.

Typical bathroom ventilation CFM’s should be installed per square foot of bathroom space. Finding the square footage of your bathroom is as easy as measuring a two walls. For instance if you have an 8′ X 10′ bathroom, then your square footage is multiplied by the two numbers for the answer (8×10=80 square feet). per 100 feet of square footage, add CFM’s for each fixture. Here’s a list of CFM limits per fixture.

Small shower enclosure 50 CFM

Large shower enclosure 100 CFM

Jetted bathtub 100CFM

Lighting

Bathroom lighting involves a subtle layering of specific types. Task lighting works perfectly over toilets, shower enclosures and bathroom vanities. however, it needs another source of ambient lighting to help prevent shadows and dark spots from forming. Ambient light sources don’t have to be electrical either. while fluorescents work perfect for any ambient bathroom light source, natural ambient sources like windows and skylights are the ultimate in both lighting and ventilation.

Aesthetic sources can be accent, ambient or task light orientated, but give you the pizzazz and style you need for your home dcor design. Hanging lights like pendant lights and wall sconces offer the perfect lighting solution for bathrooms. best of all, these bathroom lighting fixtures come in a huge variety sizes, colors, materials and styles so you’ll be sure to get a great light that suits your design as well as your budget. here are a few ideas for the ultimate bathroom lighting options.

SUMMER LOVE: I agree with Lucy from Houzz: love me some Northeast summer style:

“Every summer, I start yearning for the perfect beach house. Not that I’m a particularly beachy person — sunscreen and sand being two of my least favorite things. But a sprawling property on the coast, within earshot of the waves and warm enough to enjoy an evening barbecue, is my idea of the perfect summer retreat. Were I to live in NYC, I like to imagine I’d be zooming off to the Hamptons every weekend for a few days of upscale R&R.”

BATHROOM BEAUTIES: The Italians know design. Here’s a look at some over-the-top bathrooms from Home Designing:

“We couldn’t help but delve into the world of Italian company FAPCeramiche‘s bathroom design, the results of their product combinations give a truly fascinating and fresh approach to the common bathroom tiled walls, no longer appearing as simply functional, but almost as a piece of art. “

AIR IT OUT: A great way to display the hottest in trends: airplants, from Design Sponge:

“I never can manage to come up with them myself, but I love super duper simple DIY projects. I have such admiration for people who see something and then, boom, a couple minutes later they have turned it into something totally different. quick, easy, no muss or fuss: three-step projects are awesome. I’m going to make it my mission to hatch ideas for some this summer. This is a fantastic example, and it will serve as the inspiration for my goal.”

When it comes to the latest bathroom design, less is more … more or less.</p><p>No, we’re not messing with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s famous aphorism. It’s just that both adjectives aptly describe the latest trends. </p><p>one has to do with aesthetics: Clean-lined modern has expanded its appeal to consumers craving less clutter in their lives, reflected across the board in home furnishings. </p><p>the other has to do with the way things work: We’re demanding more performance from our showers, faucets and toilets — and technology delivers, whether it’s with eco-friendly features, such as low-flow toilets or rain showers or hands-free faucets. Then there are the LEDs and streaming music that enhance shower and tub experiences.</p><p>So what’s modern? Spa-like or a Zen vibe have defined it to date. it may be a pristine, all-white bath, but with a bit of warmth, not sterile or institutional. Form may be linear with squared-off or contoured edges or ultra sculptural with unique curves.</p><p>Vessel sinks, once an emblem of modern style, have gone mainstream, with a ubiquitous array of bowls in glass, stone, porcelain or metal — and traditional, artistic or edgy — sitting above the surface. Floating vanities are gaining traction. </p><p>popular in European baths, wall-mounted vanities and fixtures appeal because of their clean lines, potential for saving space and easy maintenance. And cabinetry, echoing trends in the kitchen and in furniture, is showing up in a lot of grayed and taupe finishes, stained to look like driftwood or painted, sometimes in high-gloss finishes. </p><p>almost in tandem to floating pieces are fully integrated sinks, which seamlessly flow into counters. It’s a sleek look, once again, a breeze to clean. </p><p>Also related are all-in-one shower basins. Prefab, of course, is not new. but what is new are stylish basins crafted from materials that offer color and pattern in materials that are so much sexier than the box-store molds.</p><p> Graphic designer Karim Rashid created playfully patterned porcelain shower bases in his signature style for Ceramica Cielo. And Cosentino offers a range of shower plates in eight patterns. its nonporous natural quartz Silestone is available in 70 colors, including magenta.</p><p>In addition to architectural solutions, there are sculptural fixtures that are more like art. Simple, pristine tubs sport shapely bodies, such as Antoniolupi’s OiO, a stand-alone tub made from translucent polyethylene that can be ethereally LED-lit. the Italian company recently introduced the Kala, a sink with a pedestal that rises gracefully and unfolds like a calla lily bloom. </p><p>at the high end of bath design, it has always been about the materials: luxurious faucets of gleaming, polished nickel or exquisite bronze, sometimes fitted with precious stones such as onyx or jade; lavish stone surfaces; whirlpool tubs (although air baths have taken a bit of air out of the whirlpools — they’re less noisy and more gentle, and you can use oils); and huge showers.</p><p>Luxuriating in spa-like ambience is attainable even if you don’t go for baroque, with fancy wall coverings, dripping chandeliers and jewelry-like faucets, although fancy still finds a market.</p><p>Fashion designer Sue Wong, for example, introduced a skirted freestanding tub with a black shell embellished in a creamy, organic, stylized design — like patterns on her dresses (for Maidstone Wholesale Supply).</p><p>Curiously, the idea of downsizing has not been lost on manufacturers. Wall-mounted cabinets come in a range of sizes, some oh-so-perfect for those space-robbed condo baths that often leave ridiculous inches, impossible to mop, between a boxy vanity and a tub. They’re super options when expanding the room’s dimensions isn’t possible.</p><p>Even with smaller footprints, storage isn’t neglected by savvy manufacturers. A new wall-mounted cabinet by Robern is only 24 inches wide but features two fully compartmentalized drawers with options such as charging stations for hair dryers and night-lights.</p><p>as the sparer European looks curry favor, there’s perhaps more of a desire for personalization.</p><p>some manufacturers are hip to that, with clever customizations that allow you to have it your way. With a modular system from Axor, introduced in may at the International Contemporary Furniture fair in new York, French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec provide tools for consumers to configure vanity counters to their needs.</p><p>“This game-changing collection has no boundaries, as faucets can be combined with shelves in a playful and very personal manner,” says Philippe Grohe, Axor’s brand manager. “No longer do faucets have to be placed in the center of the rear rim of the wash basin. instead, fittings can be freely arranged within the washing area on the integrated shelves, in front of or next to the sink or wall.”</p><p>Swiss manufacturer Laufen even has a porcelain collection designed by Andreas Dimitriadis that can be customized from about 25 1/2 to 70 inches, with integrated sinks and countertops plus shelves that can be cut to size. </p><p>the optimum in personalization comes with techno gadgetry that turns out impressive light and sound shows. </p><p>Kohler’s newest calming bath features its VibrAcoustic technology, a sound therapy that allows you to feel sound through the body.</p><p>“It’s like a going to a rock concert — you can hear and feel music and vibrations throughout your body,” says Ann Roever, business director for Kohler bathing products. Music and podcasts are streamed via hardwire or a wireless Bluetooth receiver; the feature is available on Kohler’s deep-soaking Underscore baths.</p><p>some bath upgrades can be retrofitted, which means a lot when remodeling dollars are limited. Updating a showerhead can be huge, and easily DIY.</p><p>Moen’s Twist showerhead, for example, has four spray settings. And Levaqua sells a high-tech programmable digital showerhead for less than $40, as well as one with 10 digital settings including three timers and “eco,” which uses 20 percent less water. the latter is about $50 at Home Depot. </p><p>However you create your sanctuary, a little pampering goes a long way. These days, it’s with whatever floats your boat — or rubber ducky — complete with light-changing chroma therapy, a range of hydro massages and your favorite sounds from Puccini, Reba, Adele or Flo Rida.

Using a Handmade Glass Sink in the Bathroom – Combining Art & Function

All about Glass Sinks

The hottest trend in bathroom design today is the handmade glass sink – often referred to as a glass vessel sink – which has become the latest must-have for luxury homeowners. Combine the versatility in color and design offered by glass with the vessel mount trend and it’s no wonder that our company, Glass Artists Gallery, can barely keep up with demand. Vessel-mounted, fused, slumped, mosaic, under-mounted and hand-blown sinks have even influenced the faucet manufacturers’ designs because of their unprecedented popularity.

We find ourselves answering questions and dispelling myths surrounding sinks just about every day. this article was created to answer some of the more common questions such as what is a handmade sink? Are they expensive? what are the differences in the glass sinks I see in the showrooms and online? Are they durable?

Types of Glass Sinks

To better understand the three main categories of glass vessel sinks, it helps to understand the three main types of glassmaking:

Cold Glass — Working with glass at room temperature. Examples are mosaic glass, stained glass, glass carving and etching.

Warm Glass — the process of fusing, slumping or other kiln forming techniques at temperatures between 1100 and 1700 degrees Fahrenheit.

Hot Glass– the process of blowing glass using a furnace that melts the glass at 2200 degrees Fahrenheit. once the glass is gathered on the end of a pipe, the artist forms the hot glass using a Glory Hole (an oven that maintains a temperature of around 1200 degrees Fahrenheit). the resulting work is then slowly cooled in an annealing oven.

With the above in mind, there are three main categories of artisan crafted glass sinks you will find at Glass Artists Gallery:

Fused & Slumped — Glass fusing is the process of joining together pieces of glass. when the right kind of glass is heated and then cooled properly, the resulting fused glass piece will be solid and unbroken. using fusing techniques, the artist creates patterns and designs in color. the resulting sheet of fused glass is then slumped into the vessel shape. In the slumping process the glass is laid into, or on top of a mold and heated just to the point where it Slumps to fit the form of the mold. once the glass reaches the desired form it must be cooled quickly enough to stop the movement that will result in cracking. Although this might sound simple, the resulting sinks can be quite intricate in their design and require hours of painstaking labor.

Blown Glass — Hand blown glass sinks are created through a much different process. this hot glass process allows an artist to create myriad different styles, colors, shapes and sizes that are always unique. Layers of glass are gathered onto the end of a rod or pipe and formed, blown and worked into a vessel shape. Color is applied in many different forms at the beginning of the process. once finished, the piece is annealed for a minimum of 48 hours for maximum durability. Due to variations in the glass blowing process, every sink will be unique.

Mosaic Glass — Pieces of hand-cut colored art glass are adhered to the inside surface of a 1/2 thick annealed glass bowl. Annealing is a process of bending the glass at extremely high temperatures to assure durability of use in the most extreme temperature conditions. the sink is then grouted with a specially mixed blend of sand and tinted cement, then sealed and finished with a protective clear polymer coating to create a smooth surface which is colorful, sturdy, easy to care for and a breathtaking focal point for any bathroom.

Handmade or Production?

As you can see from the types of glass sinks that are available, you have many different choices for incorporating a stunning centerpiece in the bath. the choice you will need to make is whether you want an original work of art – an artisan created sink – or a factory produced glass vessel. the trend in glass sinks has created a flood of offshore imports that are now available. We liken the current choices to the art world where you can find original art as well as prints or reproductions. Production sinks made in a factory are mass produced generally using single sheets of glass. Many are painted with a design. few, if any, are truly slumped & fused.

Durability of Glass Sinks

How do we, as glass specialists, reassure the end user of a glass sinks durability? the analogy I use is that the glass sinks we sell are made by professionals and are able to withstand similar abuse as a porcelain sink. In other words, if you drop a heavy object into a glass sink with enough force to break it, you would have also broken a typical porcelain sink. they both have similar strength characteristics.

The difference between these two materials is that glass is more prone to thermal shock. Thermal shock can occur when there is a sudden temperature change of more than 70 degrees. For example, you don’t want to pour scalding hot water (over 120 degrees) into a glass sink. Hot water from the tap is generally 100 – 110 degrees, so the temperature difference is well within the safe zone. the most common occurrences of thermal shock happen when a sink is left on a jobsite where the temperature is unregulated.

When installing a glass vessel sink, be sure your contractor knows that thermal shock can be a problem if the jobsite is not yet heated. In addition, make sure they know that the drain assembly should be hand tightened only. Over-tightening the drain is the second most common cause of breakage.

At Glass Artists Gallery, our clients use glass sinks not only in the powder room, but also in the master bath, guest baths and even children’s baths. when treated and installed properly, they are durable, safe and fantastic design options. with proper lighting, they will glow and cast wonderful light and shadow effects throughout the bath. they will certainly set your project apart
