STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – if you’re looking for hand towels, fresh flowers and marble floors when you use a Parks Department bathroom on Staten Island, you’ll be disappointed. But if you’re looking for a bathroom that’s clean and serviceable, you just might be in luck.
The Advance conducted a random survey of 17 of 32 Parks Department bathrooms on the Island and rated them in six categories — smell, safety, supply level, appearance and whether they are wheelchair accessible and open for use. The first four categories were rated one through five, with five being the best possible score.
Reporters left no toilet untested and no sink untouched as they checked out the sights and smells of each facility to see how they fared against the checklist.
Did the bathroom smell of urine? Could a slippery floor lead to safety hazards? were flies buzzing around the toilets and trash cans? did sinks have running water? did toilets flush? Basically, were the restrooms clean?
In general, most surpassed expectations.
“You wouldn’t go out of your way to use them, but for the most part, they seem to be maintained,” said Russel Yolland of South Beach while spending a recent Monday morning at Arrochar Playground with his two daughters.
Top scores went to Willowbrook Park. It received fives for smell, supplies and appearance, but received a four in safety due to minor water spillage near the sinks.
On the other side of the spectrum was Greencroft Playground in Bay Terrace. While well-stocked, reporters gave it ones in smell, safety and appearance due to an overwhelming stench of urine, wet floors and poor lighting.
Most other bathrooms received average ratings, with minor complaints like unflushed toilets or small amounts of litter. The men’s bathroom at Midland Field, for example, had hair in the sink.
Only a small number had damage. Sinks at Midland Beach were tarnished by rust stains, there were missing soap dispensers at South Beach and a cardboard box served as a men’s toilet tank cover at High Rock Park.
And while most restrooms were accessible, some were not.
The men’s bathroom at McDonald Playground in West Brighton was locked and both bathrooms at Stapleton Playground and Tompkinsville Park had signs saying they were closed when reporters visited.
According to the Parks Department, McDonald Playground was closed due to repairs being made after it was vandalized, Stapleton Playground may have been closed temporarily for cleaning and Tompkinsville Park has been closed for 10 years, with Parks saying it needs more funds before it can make repairs.
Parks also said most of its bathrooms are open year-round from dawn until dusk, except at the beaches, due to a decrease in usage in the off-season. But when open, all are cleaned daily by Parks Department staff members, whose hard work has not gone unnoticed.
“I’m a new resident. I’ve used this bathroom for all four seasons, and compared to Brooklyn, this is the best park I’ve ever seen,” said Lesa Fishman, who was attending Markham Playground with her 18-month-old son.
In addition to the 32 Parks Department bathrooms, the reporters surveyed five not operated by Parks.
At Miller Field, which is operated by the National Park Service, the men’s bathroom was locked and the women’s bathroom had a toilet but no sink.
Bathrooms at the National Park Service’s Fort Wadsworth are located in the visitor’s center, which is closed for renovations.
The St. George ferry terminal men’s bathroom, operated by the Department of Transportation (DOT), had a pungent smell, but was otherwise fairly clean. The women’s bathroom smelled clean and was well maintained.
Aboard the Spirit of America ferryboat, bathrooms had slippery floors but were otherwise complaint-free.
And the Eltingville Transit Center bathrooms, also operated by the DOT, were well supplied and lacked any foul odors.
Do you want to update your old, outdated, boring bathroom with something new? there are many styles of bathroom sinks, colors, and features from brand name manufacturers that will appeal to every lifestyle and budget. here are some of the top choices in new bathroom sinks:
oPedestal bathroom sinks: These bathroom sinks are mounted on a single column or legs and can be found in traditional, modern, or period styles.
oWall-mount sink: all of the plumbing for these sinks is hidden behind a wall and is not visible at all outside of the wall.
oVanity sink: This type of sink is probably the most commonly found. The sink has counter space all around it and a cabinet with storage space and plumbing underneath it.
oContemporary sink: little ornamentation or embellishments are found on these sinks which focus mainly on the shape and style of these bathroom sinks.
oVessel bathroom sinks: a wash basin like bowl that has a tall faucet. These bathroom sinks often sit on the counter top.
Make and keep a mental or written list of what features you like and dislike about each of these types of bathroom sinks so that when you are shopping you will be able to prioritize your choices to those that will fit your bathroom the best.
Tips To Choosing The best Sink for You
1. How much space do you have? Take measurements and keep them with you when you are shopping. You may not have space for that long vanity sink, but the pedestal style sinks may be just perfect.
2. have you decided on a style for your bathroom? Rule out any sinks that do not fit in with your overall dcor for the room as the sink will be a focal point.
3. what is your goal for storage space or floor space? if you want to increase the amount of floor space you might want to consider a wall mount. The vanity has hidden storage and pedestal bathroom sinks also have room underneath and around them for shelving, baskets, etc.
4. have you chosen what material you want your sink to be made of? You can find bathroom sinks made of porcelain, marble, cast iron, stainless steel, etc. Again, make sure that the material fits in with your overall view of the dcor. Also, think about keeping it cleaned and maintained.
5. How handy are you? Is it in your budget to hire a plumber or contractor? if you want to install the sink yourself, check with your local home improvement store for classes on installation.
Today’s sinks are more than just functional features in a room. They make a statement about the people who live in the home. your bathroom can be a reflection of the style and dcor of the rest of the home.
Good lighting in the bathroom is essential both as a way of enhancing the dcor, and to allow for effective grooming. Lighting has become one of the most important decorating accessories because it helps to enhance the bathroom style while highlighting all the other aspects of the room. The style of bathroom lighting that you choose can make or break the room. Too much or too little lighting can be uncomfortable and even dangerous.
Task lighting is installed in the bathroom to make it functional, while accent lighting gives the room a warm glow. The lighting fixtures chosen should complement and not compete with other accessories in the bathroom. everything should co-ordinate well to create the perfect design, and you can even get lighting fixtures that come as part of the bathroom suite.
Ceiling lights
Every bathroom needs ceiling lights that help to illuminate the entire room. usually in the center of the room, the lights help to keep the bathroom safe. Being a wet area, the bathroom can be a dangerous place if not well-lit. The ceiling lights come in different designs that can be used to blend in with any bathroom dcor.
Lighting above the mirror and sink
This popular bathroom lighting system involves the use of two, three or even four bulbs. The number of bulbs used depends on the design of the fixture and the length of the mirror. Lighting this space is essential for good grooming. In most cases, the lighting fixtures come as a component of the vanity unit, but they can also be a separate unit installed above the sink and mirror.
Scones on the sides of the mirror
These lights are a great addition to the mirror and they are perfect for providing even and adequate lighting on the face. they get rid of shadows, which is necessary when applying makeup or shaving. The scones help to enhance the overall design by adding a decorative touch to the mirror.
Selecting the right bulb is just as important as choosing the right fixture. Colored or coated bulbs can add a different ambience to the room, and enhance facial features. Technology is also being used to offer more options with fiber optics being used to create different lighting effects. Manufacturers are offering more options, from reading lamps installed on the vanity or next to the toilet, to skylights, shower lights and unusually designed wall scones.
Before installing any new lighting, you should check with your local building inspectors and find out about the electrical codes in your area. The fixtures that are used in damp areas need to be approved for this specific use, which helps to make sure safety. Portable lamps should never be placed near the bathtub or sink to avoid electrocution.
You have looked at the huge selection of bathroom sinks available and chosen one. Now you are ready to fit your bathroom sink. here are four things to consider for the installation.
1. Do it Yourself?
Are you experienced in installing bathroom fixtures and dealing with plumbing and pipes or would you do better to pay the money to use a professional bathroom fitter. Even if you have not previously installed a bathroom sink you may be able to manage the work yourself if you are generally handy around the home and follow some guidelines, however do not tackle it if it’s your first DIY job. Stick to minor jobs like putting up shelves and changing fuses first
2. Where to Instal Your Sink
You probably know where you want to place your bathroom sink. The easiest place, if you are instaling a replacement is of course exactly where the old one was – all the plumbing will be there.
If you are planning a new bathroom remember to include plenty of clearance around the sink so that you can comfortably bend over it to wash your face or hair or brush your teeth.
Also think about how high to position your sink. If you are a bit taller than average put a wall-mounted sink slightly higher than usual and if you are installing a pedestal sink you may want to raise it a little by creating a small platform underneath. Just a couple of inches can make a difference when you are bending over a sink. of course, if others are going to use the sink you may have to compromise but generally a couple of inches does not make much difference to them but a lot of difference to you.
3. Splashing Water
No matter how careful you are when you have a bathroom sink, water will get splashed about. make sure that surrounding surfaces such as the vanity unit in which you are installing your sink and the flooring are able to cope with that. also protect the wall behind the sink with wall tiling. It does not have to be wall to ceiling tiling – just a few tiles will avoid damage to the walls if necessary.
4. consider a Mirror and Lighting
A sink needs a mirror above it if it is to be used for shaving or putting on make up and both these activities need good lighting. consider a mirror which has lighting incorporated as there are some lovely designs available in styles to match every dcor.
Today I visited 12 Crosskey, a five bedroom home with two bonus rooms, both additions to the original house.
The basics: Asking Price: $959,000 Bedrooms: 5 Bathrooms: 3 Square Footage: 3,100 Lot Size: 4,550 $/Sq Ft: $309 Property Type: Single Family Home Year Built: 1977 Community: Woodcrest
this home has no HOA dues and no Mello Ross Tax.
The house is in great condition, with many recent upgrades, including new wood floors downstairs and new carpet upstairs, new vinyl windows, and new tile floors and showers in the bathrooms. other upgrades include new mirrored closet doors, recessed lighting, new fixtures, and a new wood patio.
The first rooms I saw when I walked into the house were the living room and dining room, both on the left. Oddly, the living room still had furniture in it, though the rest of the house is completely vacant. it is nice and bright, with an attractive fireplace and high ceiling. The living room is two steps down from the hallway and one step below the dining room, so there are several different levels within the downstairs of the home.
Continuing down the hallway, I passed a large, wide staircase and entered the great room – a family room and a fully remodeled kitchen. The great room is very spacious, with a fireplace in one corner, a bay window in the breakfast nook and pretty wood floors. it has a walk-in bar and an open storage area under the stairs.
The kitchen has brand new stainless steel appliances (no fridge), new granite countertops, maple cabinets, and a large breakfast bar with bookshelves on one side. It’s a fairly small kitchen in terms of floor space, but it does seem to have ample counter and cabinet space, including a pantry.
A bonus room was added on downstairs, behind the dining room. It’s a triangular shaped room, fairly narrow at one end, with doors to close it off from the dining room if desired. it also has sliding doors to the backyard. this would make a great playroom for little kids and could also be used as an office or exercise room. its size, shape and lack of closet wouldn’t make it ideal for a bedroom.
There is also a full bedroom downstairs with mirrored closets and a ceiling fan. The full bath downstairs has two sinks and a shower.
Upstairs, I found three more secondary bedrooms. each has mirrored closets and they share a bathroom featuring two sinks and a tub/shower combo. one has a ceiling fan. they are average size and don’t have any special details.
The master bedroom is a big room with a ceiling fan and high ceilings. Two tall, narrow windows overlook the backyard. it has two cedar-lined walk-in closets, providing ample storage and a nice aroma. past the closets is a remodeled bathroom, with a separate tub and shower and two sinks. The floors and shower are beautifully retiled and all of the fixtures are new. The cabinets appear to be original but are in good condition.
The other addition to the house is upstairs through the master bedroom. it is approximately the same size as all of the secondary bedrooms but it lacks a closet. because it is only accessible through the master bedroom, it somewhat limits what you would use it for, but it would make a nice office, exercise room, or private sitting room. It’s a nice extra space to have.
The home’s biggest downfall is a fairly small backyard, partly due to the downstairs bonus room. However, it does still have a grassy area, a patio, and a fenced-in spa.
I like this house a lot. it is at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac and all of the upgrades are attractive and well done. There is plenty of living space for a large family and it has a three car garage. The house has only been on the market for about a week and I imagine it will sell fairly quickly.
Just because your bathroom is functional doesn’t mean it can’t be stylish in fact, people are investing more time, energy, and money into creating a bathroom space that reflects their personal style and the dcor of the rest of their home. little touches in bathroom furnishings can add up to a big difference
Fashionable furnishing
The first thing most people notice when they walk into the bathroom is the vanity-including the sink, cabinet, countertop, and mirror. the combination sets the style for the room-traditional, contemporary, country cottage, European, zen, Victorian, or any other look that appeals to you. even small bathrooms can get big style by installing an interesting vanity. Single-sink vanities by Belle Foret and Empire Industries look like a cherished antique and Stufurhome incorporate the style of fine furniture. More contemporary designs, like Madeli, Vigo, Design Element, and Dreamline, offer wall-mounted vanities in clean lines with one or two sinks.
Accent your vanity with one of today’s many sink designs. You have your choice of undercounter, wall-mounted, basin, or vessel, in rectangular, round, oval, and square. Bathroom sinks can even look like a piece of art-like the Kraus Irruption Galaxy Blue rectangular glass sink with a waterfall faucet or the Dreamline stone vessel. You can also forego the vanity altogether and install a pedestal sink, for elegant simplicity.
What’s a vanity without a mirror where you can admire (or adjust) your looks? Accent your vanity with a mirror, with or without a medicine cabinet behind it. Just like your vanity and sink, consider the mirror like fine bathroom furnishings rather than an afterthought. the shape, style, and frame of your mirror should accent the room’s design.
If you want a medicine cabinet over your vanity, you don’t have to sacrifice style to get storage. Distinctive designs provide an attractive exterior, like the Foremost Wingate, which looks like fine cabinetry. some facades are so unique that you’d never know there’s a cabinet behind them. And you’re not limited to the rectangular shape. Medicine cabinets are available with oval, octagonal, and other unusual shapes. Install one or place them side by side over dual sinks.
Light up the room
Illumination is important in any room. in your bathroom, it’s essential to get the right level of lighting. Luckily, today’s lighting designers are giving you a vast array of styles to help you achieve the look and the light you want. You can put lights above your vanity, sconces on either side of your mirrors, or install an overhead fixture-or any combination of these choices. If you need bright light when using your vanity mirror but prefer softer lighting while enjoying a relaxing soak in the tub, add a dimmer switch to adjust the brightness.
Rain glass adds another dimension to your bathroom lighting. the hand-pressed glass appears dotted with drops of rain on a window and gives a gentle illusion of soft light coming through a rain-streaked window. Varaluz uses recycled rain glass in some of its bathroom lighting fixtures.
As with every other detail in your bathroom furnishings, lighting choices allow you to customize the room to your particular design style.
Plumb perfect
Bathroom hardware reflects the current trend toward customizing this space. Sink faucets come in a range of styles, with single or double handles, and in finishes like polished chrome, stainless steel, brushed nickel, brass, and the latest trend of oil-rubbed bronze. your bathroom faucet can have a Victorian style, like the Danze Opulence, or ultra-modern, like the Kraus Millennum. You can choose an eco-friendly bathroom faucet like the Toto EcoPower, which uses a revolutionary self-generating hydropower system. no matter what your taste, you can find a faucet to match.
And speaking of matching, many bathroom faucet styles are also available in shower and bathtub fixtures.
Finishing touches
Once you’ve completed all of the other details of your bathroom design, it’s time to add the finishing touches. Towel warmers have become very popular as more homeowners view their bathrooms as a private spa. the luxury of wrapping yourself a warmed bath towel or robe adds a bit of well-deserved pampering for a small investment.
Shower rods don’t need to just support your decorative curtain. Choose a rod that accents the room, in a finish like oil-rubbed bronze or polished brass, for more interest. Add a bit more shower room with a curved rod, and look for rod brackets that accent the style of your room.
When you’re preparing to remodel or just refresh your bathroom, you’re no longer limited by choices. Bathroom furnishings are as beautifully designed for this space as for any room in your house. Whether water closet or spa, you can customize any bathroom to make it special.

Pad thai returned to the wok and ceviche to the chopping board, as two restaurants that health inspectors had forced to close reopened their doors.
The two restaurants are Thai Pan Asian on Chapel Street and Grand Avenue’s La Molienda. although health inspectors found the violations in both establishments serious enough to close them, the two restaurants have cleaned up their acts and were allowed to open again after follow-up inspections.
The unusual closings (usually restaurants get to stay open while improving their scores) came amid a wave of tough inspections, with nine eateries receiving failing grades within the last two weeks of June.
City sanitarians inspect all of New Haven’s restaurants, groceries, bars, and any other establishment that serves food between one and four times a year. Establishments that score less than 80 usually have two weeks to make the recommended corrections. The health department can also close a restaurant, regardless of its score, if the sanitarians suspect an immediate danger to public health.
The last batch of inspections, conducted in the last weeks of June, failed more restaurants than usual. out of 49 inspected establishments, nine failed.
Thai Pan Asian failed its health inspection on June 25 with a score of 48 out 100. The city’s inspectors found a whopping 79 specific violations in the restaurant. Among them were damaged walls, dirty floors, rodent droppings in the basement, cockroaches roaming freely, and employees who didn’t wash their hands.
“Everything is OK now,” said Ben Chanhom, the restaurant’s owner.
Thai Pan Asian looked clean Tuesday morning, with several customers washing down their drunken noodles with ice-cold glasses of bubble tea.
“I had to close anyway, because of problems with the floor” that couldn’t be fixed while customers were in the restaurant, said Chanhom.
“It’s the worst inspection I’ve ever seen,” said one health department worker.
La Molienda did not impress the inspector who came to visit on June 21, either; it received a score of 68. The inspector found roaches in the ice machine and throughout the kitchen, moldy food, a smelly back yard—and unlabeled rat poison sitting right next to bins of sugar.
Raúl Vasquez, the restaurant’s cook, called the violations “minor.”
“they came on Monday and asked us to close, but by Thursday we were open again,” he said. “we corrected whatever minor mistakes we might have made, and that’s why when they came back they gave us a better grade.”
The Advanced Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, previously known as the Jewish Home for the Aged, meanwhile cleaned up its act. after having to throw away spoiled food, the center corrected its violations and now has a passing grade of 82.

Two weeks ago, singer Céline Dion and her husband/manager René Angélil announced that because their Quebec mansion was seldom used — due to her concert schedule — they had decided to put the fabulous island retreat up for sale. At $29,655,500, including all the furnishings, the Île Gagnon retreat was hailed as the most expensive property ever listed on the Quebec housing market.
Earlier this week, Sotheby’s International Realty Quebec broker Joseph Montanaro offered Postmedia an exclusive interview and a sneak peak into the world of a superstar.

The chateau’s furnishings are included in the price.
Located approximately 25 kilometres north of downtown Montreal, in the Sainte-Rose district of Laval, the secluded 19-acre paradise is surrounded by the Rivière des Mille Îles. A short stone causeway allows access from the mainland to the island, where one passes through two huge gated fences and a guardhouse maintained by securityofficers 24 hours a day. The property is virtually impregnable without an invitation.
Once on the island, there’s a sense of being in a well-groomed park, or a tastefully landscaped forest, complete with more than a dozen varieties of majestic soft- and hardwood trees, including varieties of oak, pine and maple. Chirping baby robins clamber over the lawn, following their mother and begging for worms and insects, while great blue herons stealthily stalk the shoreline, spearing frogs and small fish with their dagger-like beaks. One is immersed in the bucolic pleasures of nature.
A short drive down the crushed stone driveway, the forest opens up and the first glimpse of the mansion is visible, in all its grey stone glory.
First-century Roman statues and other intricately carved 2,000-year-old artifacts adorn the landscape, close to the residence’s entranceway. “At one time there were 200 people working on the house during its building,” Mr. Montanaro says. “It took two years to build and was completed in 2001.”

courtesy of Sotheby’s International Realty canada Situated on 19 acres, the 24,000-square-foot dwelling is a Canadian version of Buckingham Palace or Château Versailles, albeit on a smaller scale.
The three-storey French Normandy-style château is a modern, private castle, built of grey stone and topped with a slate roof and surrounded by glorious landscaping features.Entering the grand foyer of the 24,000-square-foot residence, one is dazzled, with a feeling of entering an ultra-luxurious opera house.
An exquisite, polished wood and wrought-iron-adorned staircase (one that would have made Scarlett O’Hara blush with envy) winds upwards, opening onto each of the three levels.
The first floor is largely sheathed in fine white and grey marble detailing of the highest quality. Custom-made Persian rugs are laid upon the marble, adding further richness.
Overhead, a lavish onyx and gold gilded chandelier hangs from the coffered ceiling. The place is a Canadian version of Buckingham Palace or Château Versailles, albeit on a smaller scale. but the entrance hall is just a teaser for what is to follow.
The first floor features a formal dining room that seats 18, with chairs covered in silk upholstery. The oversized windows are hung with golden silk drapes. There is also a smaller informal dining room for when it’s just family at home.
Next is the main living room, fashioned for entertaining guests, the ceiling of which has hand-painted blue skies and white clouds.
Adjacent is the custom La Cornue hardwood-panelled kitchen with its three granite-topped islands, 62-inch cooktop, four prep sinks, built-in rotisserie, three ovens, four fridges and an Elektra espresso machine. If you are interested in cooking, then this is a kitchen to die for.

There must be dozens of televisions in the six-bedroom, six-bathroom home, as well as an integrated sound, satellite and lighting system throughout.
Besides lavish marble floor coverings, many of the floors are done in custom wood in herringbone and basket weave patterns, with intricate figurative and floral inlays. There is a dreamy sun room with cut-stone walls, expansive long windows and warm-toned Jerusalem stone flooring.
“Every room has a television set or sets in it,” Mr. Montanaro says. “Mr. Angélil loves media and television.” There must be dozens of televisions in the six-bedroom, six-bathroom home, as well as an integrated sound, satellite and lighting system throughout.
Mr. Angélil’s office is covered from floor to ceiling in exquisite bird’s-eye maple, with albums, CDs and mementos. Celine Dion has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide.
On the second level is the lavish double master suite and the more contemporary children’s suites, one designed with a false black alligator skin patterned flooring and white shelving, walls and ceiling.
“This look is more like their present home on Jupiter Island, Florida,” the broker says. “The Florida house is more contemporary and in a Bahamian style, which reflects the local climate, while this home is more classic and settled and characteristic of Quebec architecture.”
The third floor holds the gym and guest room, with its canopied and richly carved bed frame. It also has Ms. Dion’s wardrobe of rack upon rack of outfits and a dedicated closet for her extensive shoe collection, all categorized in style and colours.
“It’s no secret that Ms. Dion is a huge shoe and fashion aficionado,” Mr. Montanaro says. The lower level holds the games room with its billiard table, card table and well-stocked bar.
Here also is the mother of all wine cellars: A four-room, vaulted-stone wine cellar with integrated tasting room with seating for 10 people. One room is for red wines, one for white wines, one for Champagne and one for sherries and port.
A customized elevator whisks you from floor to floor. almost every room of the home features a handmade fireplace of the finest coloured marble available. almost every room of this house has a river view.
There are numerous exterior terraces with wrought iron railings and water and forested views.
A very large outdoor in-ground pool is accompanied by a stone pool house, incorporating its own kitchen and built-in barbecue.
This residence is a turnkey purchase, meaning that all the furniture, artwork (for which there is an inventory catalogue), Persian rugs, glassware, flatware, china, linens and much more are part of the purchase. No personal items are included.
Prospective buyers must be pre-qualified before a viewing is allowed. Mr. Montanaro believes the property won’t be on the market for long. “We already have three visits scheduled for June and there is a lot of interest.”Postmedia News
