British Airways and Solena Group, a U.S.-based biofuel company, announced that they signed a “sustainable bio-fuel” agreement under which city waste will be converted to jet fuel. Solena Group will build a plant in the London area that will be operational by 2014, and British Airways will purchase all the fuel produced at the plant. it is expected that this city waste to jet fuel program will produce two percent (2%) of British Airways’ total jet fuel needs in the first year of operation. by 2050, the plant is expected to produce 10% of the airline’s fuel needs.
City waste, including organic material such as food, is a major source of methane gas, and researchers estimate that London produces more than 3 million tons of organic waste each year. Initially, the Solena plant will convert 500,000 tons of waste to 15 million gallons of “green” jet fuel each year. British Airways and Solena Group expect that using this bio-fuel will reduce both organic waste and greenhouse gases produced by burning regular jet fuel.
